Portea (por’te-a) – Belonging to the Bromelioideae subfamily; this genus consists of seven species and some are outstanding in their beauty.
They are terrestrials and grow in full sun in the coastal regions of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Robust plants with large spines and when in bloom may reach 1.2 m in height. Their inflorescences are generally regarded as one of the most decorative, combining delicate colors of lavender and pink to form colorful displays. Hardy plants that flower for months on end.
